Transmission Electron Microscopy: A Textbook for Materials Science

This text is widely used around the world. The companion volume has been published.

The main book is available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, etc., as hardback (one volume) or paperback (in 4 separate volumes that are only available as a package).

Publication Date: August 5, 2009 | ISBN-10: 038776500X | ISBN-13: 978-0387765006 | Edition: 2nd

It is also available from Amazon in a Kindle Edition and through Barnes & Nobles "Nook"

Soft or Hard Cover

The soft cover version is modelled after the original text by Jeff Eddington, Dave's thesis advisor. The idea is that students only have to carry one quarter of the book to class! You can easily fold it open next to you at the microscope.

The hard cover (almost the same price at Amazon or B&N) makes sure that part 4 is still there when you are studying Part 2 and helps exercise your muscles. The publisher decided to include the figure credits and the index in each of the 4 parts because the 4 parts often became separated and this is a textbook!

The Questions

A new component in the second edition is the inclusion of 2 sets of questions for every chapter. The Self-Assessment questions are one way for you to check that you really understood and remember what you just read - all the answers are in the chapter. The Text-Specific questions are specific to that chapter and can be answered with the information given in the chapter or in combination with information in other chapters.

The Companion Volume

The purpose of the Companion volume is mainly that we did not want to increase the size (and hence the weight) of this textbook.

"Williams & Carter" is the basic TEM textbook. We know part 1 is called "Basics" but really the whole book is the basics of TEM. The Companion volume expands on selected topics in Williams & Carter (which we refer to as W&C). What is special about the Companion volume is that the level is the same as for W&C and the terminology is the same as is used in W&C—so it is still intended for beginning grad students or others who are learning on their own before they delve into the current literature. There are many more references in the Companion volume.

Once again, the references for all the Figures are collected together to provide an extensive resource for students.
